Thanksgiving Vocabulary: Word Search Activity Pack

Need a calm, ready-to-use word activity before the holiday break? This free pack combines one fixed printable word search with short meaning, sorting and writing tasks. The letter grid is a starting point, not a substitute for teaching word meaning. It can be adapted for an elementary classroom, homeschool session, or family table.

Download the worksheet and matching answer key

Print tip: the downloadable worksheet and answer key are a matching, fixed-grid pair. If you create a new online puzzle, print the newly generated answer key instead; it will not match the fixed PDF.

Learning objectives and preparation

Print one worksheet per learner and keep the answer key with the adult. Have pencils and scrap paper available. For students who do not observe Thanksgiving, present the words as a vocabulary and cultural-language exercise; do not require anyone to describe a personal holiday celebration.

20-minute activity plan

  1. Preview (3 minutes). Write HARVEST, SHARING and GRATITUDE on the board. Ask: “What might someone harvest?” “What is one example of sharing?” Clarify that gratitude means appreciation; invite examples from ordinary days as well as holidays.
  2. Find words (8 minutes). Hand out the fixed word search. Students circle or highlight words and check spelling. Encourage tracing a straight line across rows, columns or diagonals instead of guessing letters.
  3. Sort and justify (5 minutes). Ask pairs to categorize six words. Example: PUMPKIN and DINNER are connected to food; FAMILY and SHARING are connected to people and activities; THANKFUL and GRATITUDE describe feelings or ideas. Accept a different classification when students can explain it.
  4. Use the words (4 minutes). Students write two complete sentences using different words. Share one sentence with a partner and say what the word means in that context.

Three versions of the same activity

Support · emerging readers

Focus on six terms: FAMILY, DINNER, FEAST, AUTUMN, TURKEY and SHARING. Let students find two words with a partner first; allow drawing and verbal explanations.

Check: define or illustrate two found words.

Standard · confident readers

Try all 12 words. Sort at least six into categories and write two clear sentences using different terms.

Check: sentences demonstrate meaning rather than only repeating the word.

Extension · deeper thinking

Compare HARVEST and FEAST, or THANKFUL and GRATITUDE. Explain how the pairs relate and how their meanings differ; ask learners for an example.

Check: each answer includes a reason or example.

Word bank and sample answers

The printable uses twelve terms: HARVEST, AUTUMN, FAMILY, THANKFUL, DINNER, TURKEY, PUMPKIN, GRATITUDE, FEAST, NOVEMBER, SHARING and TRADITION. Sample sorting is flexible: HARVEST, PUMPKIN and TURKEY relate to food or agriculture; FAMILY and SHARING to people or activities; THANKFUL and GRATITUDE to feelings or ideas. NOVEMBER is a month. A student may reasonably place SHARING with ideas, too, if they explain their thinking.

Sentence examples: “Our family shared dinner after the long walk.” “I felt thankful when someone helped me learn a difficult word.” These are examples, not required personal experiences.

Quick exit ticket

2. Choose one word and explain its meaning: ____________________.

3. Use a different word in a complete sentence: ____________________.

4. Which category fits your chosen word? Explain why: ______________________________________.
